The first one is that I've gotten really good at wheelies on my bike so whenever there's a bunch of kids they just yell, "Wheelie wheelie!!" So I was riding up the street to an investigators house and there's a 5 foot deep 4 feet wide gutter on the side off the road for floods, and I saw some kids so I did a wheelie and then I fell of my bike head first into the gutter!!!! I was covered in mud and the the bike fell in on top of me! I handed my bike to Elder Simpson who was laughing hysterically, and then climbed out. All the kids started laughing so hard! Then all the parents came out and laughed too. It was so funny, funniest thing that's happened on my mission so far:) and I wasn't even hurt! But I did smash my bottle so if you could send me an new 32 oz hydro flask that would be great:)<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
This morning we went to these caves-- really just a really deep depression in the ground. It was still way cool though. I made a fort out of rocks:) </div>
<div>
Mom: What does E. Simpson think of your rock creations? </div>
<div>
L: He thinks they're cool:) but he also thinks I'm a hippie:)</div>
<br />
It was surprise missionary Sunday in church this week, which means we all had to give a talk with 5 min. notice. I talked about keeping the commandments and having the spirit, then I bore my testimony and cried in front of every one. I told the branch that I had literally felt the arms of Christ around me. It was cool, and I have. This funny old guy in the ward came up to me and was like, "Hey why are you crying?!" It was funny:) Oh, and the youth sunday school teacher didn't show up so me and Elder Simpson taught it:) It was way fun and we had a great lesson on following the revelation that God gives us.<br />
<div>
Mom: What is the branch like? </div>
<div>
L: The youth is like 7 kids, and the branch is like 60 active members, 300 less active. </div>
<div>
Mom: Do you work with the inactive? </div>
<div>
L: We are working with 4 inactives, but the rest have been inactive for like 20-30 years and we just can't find them anymore.<br />
<br />
Mom: Tell me about E. Simpson.<br />
<div>
L: He's been out for a year, he has an older brother and 4 younger sisters. One died while he was out, I think about 5 months ago, it was really hard for him, but he's really helped me get through my trials, because he's already been through so much. I think it's interesting that God has put me with two companions who have had a family member die while they were out. I think he's trying to show me I'm not the only one going through hard stuff, and compared to them I'm not.<br />
<br />
We helped a member chop her yard the other day and she called me a bulldozer. I've bought my own cutlass (machete) and I've gotten really good with it:) so when I come home I won't need the lawn mower any more. I'll just use a cutlass:)</div>
<div>
M: They won't let you bring that home you know.</div>
<div>
L: They actually will if you check it. :)</div>
<div>
Dad: Dude, we are keeping the mower.<br />
<div>
<br />
Oh and yesterday we had three different members feed us!! It was awesome, one lunch and two dinners:) {Getting fed by members is rare, bc everyone is so poor.}</div>
<div>
Mom: Couldn't you spread out the meals over a few days? </div>
<div>
L: When someone offers you food in Jamaica, you just say YES. End of story.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Mom: What do the chicken feet taste like? Don't they have bones? </div>
<div>
L: They cook them so long the bones are soft and they just taste like whatever you cook them in, so curry.</div>
<div>
M: Gross. gross. gross.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div>
I have to go in like two minutes but I really love you guys and I miss you so much, tell the family I love them ok:)</div>
<div>

<br />
I stole this photo from the sister missionaries blog. Luke said he didn't trust the internet cafe they were in today for viruses, so no pics. :( There are 4 Elders and 2 sisters in his district, he says having the sisters is fun, but they never see them except at church and meetings.<br />

The new area I'm in is flat, windy as heck and very hot, with little rain, but I like it. People are a little better with mental comprehension here. My companion is Scottish and used to be in a gang and fight all the time, but he's way cool and way fun to be with and he's really nice and funny. I will enjoy serving with him. <br />
<br />
<div>
Conference was really good, it answered a lot of the questions I had on my mind and was praying about. I felt like the general theme was enduring trials by way of faith, keeping the commandments and relying on Christ's atonement in all things. It really gave me a lot of hope. But seriously, every single talk went back to trials. I wonder if people are already going through trials or people are about to go through trials?<br />

The story starts at 42 min. and goes till the end. You can see him a few times, singing, on the roof, shoveling and cutting grass.Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00210229216055218902noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2430574838827710392.post-32752285935302844822015-09-28T10:19:00.000-07:002015-09-28T10:19:10.445-07:00Bike races in Old Harbor<div>
My new area (Old Harbor) is way hotter and way dryer. Apparently, it hasn't rained for 3 months, but it's nice and flat, so riding my bike is like a thousand times easier. </div>
<div>
<br />
The members here are way cool and really nice, they talk about and discuss the deepest doctrines. In church this Sunday, we talked the whole time on godly intelligence. Honestly, I didn't get what they were saying-- so they all must be smarter than me. </div>
<div>
<br />
My new companion is way cool, really fun and energetic. I'm much happier to be with him. We live in a four man house and we have a lot of fun together. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In my new area everyone pimps their bicycles. It's sick! If you're riding and pass someone you just yell, "Race!" and you race right there with a random stranger. It's way fun. <br />
<br />
I don't have the means to upload pics today sorry, but I saw the blood moon too. We had dinner on the front lawn and watched it. It was cool, the other Elders where freaking out, one of them said a prayer that the clouds wouldn't cover it:)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I love you Mom and Dad, tell the family I love them.</div>

Mom,</div>
<br />If all I could say<br />was three words for this day<br />If thats all I could share <br />To let you know that I care<br />It sure would be tuff<br />But it's still just enough <br />To say<br />I love you<br /><br />Happy birthday Mom, I think your birthday's this week right? I'm a terrible son ;) <br />but I really want you to know how amazing you've been in my life Mom. You've raised me up right and taught me so much, not to mention being my best friend, and all the love you show me.<br />I love you mom.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Interviews with President Brown were awesome, 5 min. in I started crying and didn't stop till after I'd finished the closing prayer, he cried a lot too. At first, I didn't feel like he understood me but by the end I knew he could really understand me. That guy is amazing. He went teaching with us after the interviews and he made me and Elder Gordan and the investigator cry, it was so spiritual.<br /><br /><div>
Transfers came and I'm leaving Linstead and moving to Old Harbor, and I will be with Elder Simpson. He's 5 foot nothing and Scottish, he's got a serious accent-- so, pretty stoked for that. Today we went to the caves again. I'll send the pics next week it was way fun.<br /><br />I bore my testimony so hard to an investigator-- she just looked at me and said, "I hate to admit it... but I just know everything you're saying is true!" What!!!!! It was sick! The spirit was so strong and I felt so much love for her that at the end of the lesson I gave her my glasses. Let me rewind, at the beginning of the lesson she asked if she could try them on and she said they worked really well and she could see great. She had such a bright smile on her face the second she slipped them on I almost gave them to her right there. Then she told me she was trying to take classes to get a job. But she couldn't see the board, so by the end, I just gave them to her and told her if they don't work you can give them back, but if they work, they're a gift. Luckily, the next day she said they worked great, I was so happy. <br /><br />Which brings me to the other thing-- I probably only have three months worth of contacts, so if you could send me some that would be great. Thanks guys. </div>

He's so cool-- he was a convert for a year when he came out on his mission and he's one of the wisest and most spiritual kids I know, I really enjoyed serving around him:)<br /><br />That's awesome Kate and Ella are doing Peter Pan! Film it so I can watch later. I can't believe Kate broke her arm again! Tell her I'm sending her all my loving healing energy.<br /><br />The hurricane storm thing didn't even rain over here! In fact there's a drought in Jamacia right now. Since they don't irrigate, all the crops are starting to die. Don't worry, the mission has a great system for huricanes and TONS of precautions against them. <br /><br /><div>
Thanks for sending the stuff mom, that means a lot and I've really missed my mints:)<br /><br />Sorry I don't have as many pictures this week, not to much happened. But we did have 22 lessons which is the most I've ever had, but this is the 5th week in a row not having any one at church. People just don't like to come to church unless it's the one next door:) And literally every house has a church next door, half the time I think people choose their denomination based on which church is closest:)<br />I love you so much mom </div>

Service project Jamaican style!!!! Chopping the grass in the yard with a machete, and mixing cement by hand with a shovel! Hardest work I've ever done! We helped a lady in the community fix up her school house:) It was a blast! </div>

Some mormons from Salt Lake who work for KSL came and filmed it all too and they said we would all be on in between sessions of the Oct. General Conference. <br />
<br />
I could mix cement so good by the end of the day that all the Jamaicans in our ward were yelling that I could mix cement like a Jamaican:) but they said I chopped the yard like a white man and that I should just stick to mixing cement:)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In addition to laying a drive way and chopping the bush we also patched her roof with the stickers made of tar:) So I got on the roof:)<br />

Oh my! So this week I got my new companion Elder Ashworth, he's a total Mormon kid from Idaho. He's 20, I think and he's cool, a total clean freak though!!! The first night he got to the house he cleaned everything!!! He mopped, he cleaned the stove, he cleaned under the stove! He cleaned under the washer and the fridge!!! But hey, I'm not complaining:) I feel like we make a good team for teaching others.<br />
<br />
This is me and Elder Packer right before he went home. I already miss serving with him :)but the day before he left I crashed my bike hard! I was peddling up a really steep hill super fast and my gears broke, so I fell down, luckily I was wearing my helmet-- which saved me, literally. But my arm got pretty scraped up, and my front rim got folded up pretty good:) Don't worry though, my arm is almost all better and I fixed my bike. The guy at the bike shop gave me a rim with red, white and blue spokes. I can't tell if he did it on purpose or not:) but it's really cool looking.<br />

<br />
So far since I've been in Jamiaca, I've been asked or begged for practically everything.<br />
My money, my tie, my shirt, my shoes, my socks! I know right?! A lady asked me for my socks! My bike, my helmet, my bag, even my daily planner someone asked me for! Also, I've been asked to get married twice:) and someone asked me for my face once and my hair. It's so funny people will just ask you for stuff even if they don't need it:) They do it kinda as a joke, but if you offer, they'll actually take it:) I've also been asked for my guinep fruit, which I actually share:)<br />
<br />
<img src="https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gif" />We also did a service project for one of our investigators named Vavine. We helped her move a ton of dirt to lay for her foundation of her house. We also carried some crazy heavy railroad ties for her fence posts. It was really hard work and I'm pretty sure she started taking lessons so we would help her with her house... but I'm happy to help anyway:)<br />
<br />
I also caught this crazy 40 legger while we were working. It's like 8 inches long and they are extremely poisonous. One bite will render you useless for a week, so I smashed it up:)<br />

Ok first crazy story! So today for P day we went to a members house who has a field and we played cricket and football (soccer) and frisbee, but we also set up my slackline and everyone tried it! It was awesome! This picture is a high rasta man who just walked over and hoped on! It was sick-- he was flailing around all over the place and everyone was laughing and all the littile kids were so excited to see the white man game:) Wow, I never thought my slack line would make such a good picture but all these little kids are awesome!<br />

The district before Elder Packer left. Now we are back up to six elders in Linstead Jamaica. Elder Hall is training a new missionary who looks like he's 15:) He's really cool though, poor kid crashed his bike the first day in Jamaica and then again later that week. But he's doing good:)<br />

I will most likely stay in this area for one or two more transfers but I will be leading it, since I will get a new companion or possibly a trainee. That would be crazy if I trained. Since I killed two different trainers I'm kind of a legend, since that's never happened before. It will be weird when Elder Packer leaves because I kinda feel like he was my real trainer the whole time. He's really awesome, I will miss him when he leaves.<br />
If I did leave this area this transfer, I think that would actually be pretty cool. I'm already ready for a change of scenery, but the people here I love-- so either way is good. <br /><br />This is my new hair cut! It's really short, I just had Elder Gordan (the Jamaican) cut it really short because it's so hot. He cut it pretty well actually, it's only a little uneven, or as the say in Jamaica-- 'lickle'. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />The other day in church the police came before sacrament and told us all about the murder statistics and how we as a church need to do more. It was strange, but we sang a song after which brought back the spirit haha:) </div>
<div>
<br />Also, I said a prayer (kneeling) in the middle of the road the other day! This guy chased us down on our bikes yelling like a madman for us to pray for him. So we said yes and he just prostrated himself on the ground in the middle of the road! So I knelt and said a prayer for him that he wouldn't be crazy basically:) and then he got up and just walked away... Regular day in Jamaica for the white guys:) <br />Why can everyone out here call us 'white man' but if we call them black man they freak out??!?! The Jamaican missionary I live with explained it to me like this, "You see Elder Johnson, this is our country so we can call you white man, but you can't call us black man in our country, that's racist. If we were in your country you could call us black man and that would be fine." I just said, "Oh, is that what you think? hahaha, take it from the guy who's been in both countries, that wouldn't fly in America!" :) Elder Gordan is so funny, he does the funniest things sometimes:) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This week I was pretty broke because I had to pay for a hospital visit for when I got worms and it took them a while to reimburse me:) So I tried some pretty interesting combinations:) I'm just grateful I can buy something other than rice today:)</div>

I also made some dumplings (boiled flour) with some canned mackerel on it (mackerel is the whole fish head bones everything all in tomato sauce) but that was actually pretty good on the dumplings:)<br />Some things I haven't eaten yet and am not looking forward to are:<br />Chicken foot soup (it looks like baby hands)<br />Ox tail stew (literally a cows tail)</div>
<div>
Big foot stew (it's all bones and skin-- what the freak!?!?!)<br />There's a few interesting dishes out here but my companion tells me all of the above are his favorite and he'd rather eat them than fried chicken (the usual dish). At first I didn't believe him, but now I think he's serious. <div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">

<br /></div>
So far I’ve given a lot of blessings out here, including one to an investigator who is dying of a kidney disease. my patriarchal blessing says everyone I lay my hands on to be healed, will in fact be healed, and I have faith in God that He can really do that, so I’m really excited to see how that all happens. <br />
<br />
God’s been showing me that there are a ton of spiritual gifts, like recently He’s given me the gift to mourn with those that mourn. It’s awesome, I feel like I can feel what people are going through, but instead of making me sad, it just makes me have hope for them and then I can help them because I know where they’re coming from. It’s cool. <br />
<br />
Let me tell you Dad, I love families. Out here it is almost impossible to find a functioning family. No one gets married, everyone lives with everyone and no one knows whose kid is whose. It hurts me so bad because all I can feel is the pain that comes from it. The people we find out here with families are usually always the most prepared to accept the gospel of Jesus Christ into their lives. It just made me so grateful that I was raised in such a strong family, and I’ve learned that I have to do everything I can to raise a strong family too. <br />
<br />
So the guy with kidney disease is still alive, he’s not doing so good though. We’ve been trying to help him understand the nature of Christ. He doesn’t even really understand the virgin birth. But in the blessing I gave him I told him he would, in fact, be healed, but the speed in which he would be healed would be dependent on his obedience and faith in God and His commandments. It definitely wasn’t me giving the blessing.<br />
<br />
It’s not rude to take pictures of people(I asked why he hasn’t sent any photos home of Jamaicans). I just try not to pull out my camera when there’s a lot of people around (which is almost all the time), cause if people know you have nice things welllll they rob you. I’ll try to take some pics with a few of my investigators -there’s a few I can trust:)<br />
<br />
I guess what I do with my time is this, I’m in the house with Elder Packer till 10:00 am, then we leave and walk or bike probably like a 5 mile radius around our house, sometimes farther. We just teach people we’ve made previous appointments with or we find new people to teach by talking to people on the street (everyone just walks up and down the street if they have nothing to do-- which is a lot). Right now me and Elder Packer have got the next 5 days full of appointments with investigators. The only thing is that almost everyone will make an appointment with you and then not be there or tell you they’re busy when you come at the time they set up, hahaha. It’s just kind of the chill mentality of Jamaica, so mostly we just teach whoever is home, right on the spot:) We get more lessons in that way anyway:)<br />
<br />
We figured out that Thunder man actually is crazy, whether he’s high or not, he just makes up his own gospel every time:) He calls me Elder Thunder though, which is pretty sick! It’s kinda become my yard name (everyone here has a yard name) plus like 6 other names! It’s so hard to find people sometimes! We’ll ask people, "Hey do you know where Horace lives?" and they say, "Who?" <br />
" You know the Rasta with the dreads?" <br />
"OH Robot!" and then we’re like "... yeah Robot!" It’s funny everyone kinda has their own code language.<br />
<br />
They have these crazy trees out here called bread fruit, and it’s basically a green potato tree and you roast them right on the stove top, and then fry them and they’re so good! Look up bread fruit trees online, they look like it’s where Dr.Seuss got his inspiration, in fact I think he got all his illustrations from here.<br />

<br />
<br />
This is one of the Elders who lives with us in our house, his name his Elder Ostrowskei. In this picture he’s holding a jack fruit. They grow right out of the trunk of trees and get bigger than watermelons! He really likes it, so he’s pretty happy about it:)<br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This other picture is some guinep fruit, I climbed a guinep tree to get it! It’s so good!!!!! You crack off the shell and then you pop the yellow part in your mouth and kinda suck and chew all the meat off the cherry-like size pit, and WOW! They are soooooooo good --favorite fruit by far!!!!! BoM in the back ground just cause.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is me and my companion at the church field, we are about to play soccer, and the missionaries actually beat the Jamaican members, but probably only cause of Elder Gordan who’s a Jamaican:) It was a fun night on the way home I got some jerk chicken from a street vendor who was selling it out of a 50 gallon drum/make shift barbecue. It was so good, but I asked for hot sauce and this guys homemade hot sauce was killer! It was so freaking hot, I thought I was going to die! They easily have peppers out here hotter than ghost peppers!</div>

This is Elder Packer and I. There’s a lady in our ward who’s extremely crafty and he had her make matching planner covers for us- they are so cool! Mine has 51 stars on the American flag haha! She only charged him the equivalent of like $10. She also makes scripture cases! I’m going to get one that is an American flag with 1/4 of the corner a Japanese flag, it’s going to be sick!</div>

A view over the orange fields of Linsted, Jamaica. White people own these orange fields and they live in this huge mansion.<br />
<br />
Everyone here calls us white man or white boy. so when I see a white person here I want to say "Hah! white man!" in a Jamaican accent haha! E. Packer goes home in two weeks! Then I’ll be done with training and I might end up being a trainer myself! That would be crazy though. I doubt they’ll do that:) It’s to bad I’m killing all my trainers- I’m back to only knowing like two missionaries again:) (killing means you’re with them for their last transfer)</div>
<div>
My Patois sucks, I can still barely understand it even. Oh, I almost forgot, I got worms!!! I had to take a pill to get rid of them but I was eating so much for a couple of weeks!:) They’re gone now, no side effects from them or the medication, just have to wash the mangos better.<br />
<br />
Don’t miss me Dad. Love you both, love the family, Luke</div>

We have one family who we teach ( it's crazy hard to find a family) and the mother has seen angels and both parents believe in love and Christ and devoting their lives to God. I've felt very strongly to teach them baptism, and so far they've agreed to be baptized and our lessons have really been powerful.<br />
<br />
This week we taught an older lady named Pam and we invited her to church and she said she didn't have money for a taxi but she'd come anyway because she knew God would provide a way for her, and she came! It really is special to find someone with true faith in God, even to action, and coming to church.<br />
<br />
Some of our area is waaaaaay out in the middle of nowhere! hahaha-- it's my favorite place:) <br />

Everyone thinks we're crazy for walking in the rain out here ( they believe that the rain makes you sick). People will just yell out to us, "White man!! Get out of the rain!!" There's one guy in our area, every time he sees us he just yells, "WHITE!" and then leaves! hahaha he's so funny:) </div>

Luckily, I’m getting used to just sweating a small ocean every time I step out into the sun:) <br /><br />Teaching here is really quite difficult. I think it’s because of the doctrine thing. People here just believe the first doctrine they hear from their church-- so when we introduce new doctrine, they rarely listen, because they are so caught up in their way vs. your way-- kind of thing. I’ve found the only way to get through to them, is to talk about Christ, and love and help them realize that on the spiritual level, we’re on the same page, but even still there are just some people who won’t listen to anything you say no matter what. But I still love everyone I come across, and it pushes me forward every day. <br /><br />Last week like I said, we went to the beach. The water is soooooo clear!!! We played soccer until they kicked us off the beach for not paying a huge amount of money for drinks. Dang it the pictures won’t download again. Sorry, I’ll try and make it work, but no promises, my card gets a virus like every two seconds so I have to keep getting it cleared.<br /><br />This is the end of my first transfer (first six weeks). One of my companions, Elder Humphrys is leaving, so my other companion, Elder Packer, will finish my training and it will just be the two of us. I’m excited for it to only be two of us—I’m starting to feel like I don’t get to say much. I like Elder Packer, he’s a really cool guy, but after this next six weeks he goes home too, so both of my trainers are leaving and then I won’t know anyone again. Oh well. <br /><br />It’s so much fun talking to all the people here, some of them really do have some crazy ideas, especially the Rastas! :) Rastafarians are totally different than I expected. Out here, they’re usually in the lower class, and are always crazy-stoned-out-of-their-mind, but are not exactly chill. In fact they’re often hostile and some carry machetes all over the place. You just walk away from those ones. :)<br /><br />I love you mom and I love you family!<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtxvqGu2GNJp4tO460flVYt_DkHDLFapB5YYPwLn8cKhyphenhyphenDPdhJ6dhBTXTbr0I0jDuv5Tw8Kkse0FvFeDfZB2UWCVorgGNtX8fZ2gJvQsN-TnjDUGmHQHBe7ZeejEzt8IDAQgViU1DOcLO_/s1600/DSCF3309.JPG"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtxvqGu2GNJp4tO460flVYt_DkHDLFapB5YYPwLn8cKhyphenhyphenDPdhJ6dhBTXTbr0I0jDuv5Tw8Kkse0FvFeDfZB2UWCVorgGNtX8fZ2gJvQsN-TnjDUGmHQHBe7ZeejEzt8IDAQgViU1DOcLO_/s640/DSCF3309.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0919VoREkZ2yO9LvqUpVwZ0K1ntaUqg5mp9e5B7RxCgIdtGxKQnKJQSnYKS7uAxkiPZ7ansQFpTN3YFaO8X8ex17G8zBULFyi_jOy-Psx9BNfiPL6ip5wIYskSiIDSgMRPulhmPJfdPAs/s1600/DSCF3310.JPG"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0919VoREkZ2yO9LvqUpVwZ0K1ntaUqg5mp9e5B7RxCgIdtGxKQnKJQSnYKS7uAxkiPZ7ansQFpTN3YFaO8X8ex17G8zBULFyi_jOy-Psx9BNfiPL6ip5wIYskSiIDSgMRPulhmPJfdPAs/s640/DSCF3310.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYN3N5zcgHB29t6mjq6G8IrC5-f-ttybuDW-ZEDQrM0zkYEFxOxU6TXp9cqF3L4LTl7jg8S2nvv_9sbvrObR7oPYwpLfX6ZKzWMtpDYj-E7wo3bsRP3pFOXZXB-MV8MPPbWjBgCx6VXe44/s1600/DSCF3315.JPG"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYN3N5zcgHB29t6mjq6G8IrC5-f-ttybuDW-ZEDQrM0zkYEFxOxU6TXp9cqF3L4LTl7jg8S2nvv_9sbvrObR7oPYwpLfX6ZKzWMtpDYj-E7wo3bsRP3pFOXZXB-MV8MPPbWjBgCx6VXe44/s640/DSCF3315.JPG" /></a><br /><br />My District in front of the church<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOP8OmDYkBR2AD6Mqp8dAuy5lg4PFtAeFulxXuGYdwSCKLru55LpD-d0xwSqABKwZE8KonvyQrkIXleeSooIE4h0Him3Ivd61S5rrRcCFWt78SJ5fB7ycv0wqnSQvUcFKT33Nko5fPIg1u/s1600/DSCF3317.JPG"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOP8OmDYkBR2AD6Mqp8dAuy5lg4PFtAeFulxXuGYdwSCKLru55LpD-d0xwSqABKwZE8KonvyQrkIXleeSooIE4h0Him3Ivd61S5rrRcCFWt78SJ5fB7ycv0wqnSQvUcFKT33Nko5fPIg1u/s640/DSCF3317.JPG" /></a><br /><br />Cook shop meal, fried chicken, veggies, akki and salt fish, dumpling and rice and peas<br /><br />Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00210229216055218902noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2430574838827710392.post-46441527056848695502015-06-22T19:29:00.001-07:002015-06-22T19:29:08.846-07:00Outer Space<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;">
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Hey Mom and Dad,</span></div>

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;">
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Today for Pday we woke up at 4 in the morning again to come to Ochi, it’s a tourist town with beaches and craft markets. I didn’t really find anything worth buying in the craft market but I’m excited to go to the beach after this:) I’ll send those pics next week.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;">
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">It’s sad, but a good amount of people join the church here for support, but since no one really pays much fast offerings there’s never really anything to go around. I don’t know all the details, but it feels like the church out here doesn’t really get very much support from the US. </span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; min-height: 15px;">
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;">
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">It has been so hard out here! I’m not too tired anymore though, I kinda got used to it, but teaching out here is crazy difficult since no one really has a desire to exercise faith and mostly just want to talk with the white guys and the china man. None of our investigators came to church again which was kinda discouraging, but I guess it’s the norm out here. God always lifts my spirits though. Like the other day, I went to the baptism of the sisters investigator, and wow, she went in glowing and came out shining! I could see she truly had faith to follow her Father in Heaven. I know God has people He wants me to meet out here, even if it’s not to baptize all of them, He still wants me to help them. I’ve never felt so much love for random strangers:) The peoples life style here is often really jacked --and it’s really starting to take a toll on me spiritually. It’s just a lot of darkness, but God is strengthening me by it, without a doubt and I feel I’m growing closer to him every day. </span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; min-height: 15px;">

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;">
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">We bike so much out here, probably like 10 miles or more a day sometimes. My companions have kinda crappy bikes, so they’re pretty slow and I ride ahead. I’ve gotten really good at wheelies-- then I tore a hole in my pants:) oops! Good thing you sent me with those patches! Thanks Mom:) </span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; min-height: 15px;">
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;">
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I’ve been practicing meeting people and finding potential investigators. My favorite thing to do is to walk up to someone with a smile, pull out the Book of Mormon and say, "Hey! Have you ever seen one of these before?" It works pretty good! The other day, I met and made 7 appointments, which is a lot. But numbers don’t matter, out here it’s all about just helping people at least have a desire to show faith to God. Everyone is Christian, but no one wants to do anything about it. But there are a few we met and things are going well with. One of our investigators, named Kernel, we asked, “When do you want to get baptized?” and he just said, “Whenever you’re ready!!” and he was serious. He’s already read the Book of Mormon one and a half times. He was telling us though, that he wants to make this dramatic exit from his 7th Day church and try to bring some people with him, we just told to bring everyone who would come:)</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Ok you will not believe what happened to me literally just now! This old lady came up from behind me and just kissed me on the neck, and then said, “Do you remember me from outer space?” I was like, freak no lady! I’m writing an email!!! Holy crap, freakiest thing ever!!!!!! </span></div>

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;">
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Me and my friend Elder Gordan, the Jamaican missionary who lives with us, are pretty good friends. Every night we sing an EFY song together and compare Jamaica to the US. We have a good time and I feel like we get each other. This is Elder Gordan and I in front of our house:) The other one is me and my companions on a bridge over a nice river.</span><br />

<div>
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So first things first, and I'm really sorry, but no pictures this week! We are at a bush internet cafe, but next week for sure! </span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">For P Day today we woke up at 4am in the morning to go caving! Wow! It was so cool! We hiked through the jungle and then climbed down vines into a 20 ft. hole, and then went like 2 miles down into this cave full of bats and crystal stalagmites. Wow, it was sooooooo cool! Especially climbing the vines on the way out. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">It's so hard out here, I'm totally tired every day, but when I teach someone, the Spirit just blasts me in the face with Spirit juice until at the end of the lesson I'm crying. I cry like every day in front of my investigators. The other day our investigator named Anesha said I was emotional and all I could do was agree, as I choked through the prayer. :) I love helping everyone out here, I just hope God blesses me with the ability to teach in a way that might soften their hearts enough to accept the joy that comes from coming closer to God. It's amazing! </span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">God has really been teaching me how to trust him with my learning. He's taught me how to be teachable from everything. He's also really taught me a lot of sacrifice. A LOT! Freak, I feel like I could go through anything and be able to keep giving, which is such a blessing because all I want to do is serve and make others happy. :) But it is starting to take a toll on me, living in a house with five guys! :) But who cares? It's amazing out here in they ghetto bush country. I love it and I love all the people here! Every day I feel more tired than the day before but every day I want to yell louder and louder that Christ lives!!!! And that God loves them!!!! Wow, such a wonderful time! </span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Well anyway, that's about it. Our investigators are all doing pretty good for the most part and we had the first stake conference in Jamaica yesterday. A 70 gave a pretty great talk about sacrifice, which was definitely for me. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Love you all so much,</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="color: #eeeeee;">Hey everyone,</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; min-height: 15px;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">I’ve been learning so much from my studies and teaching people! Basically, I just want to learn to follow the spirit better so I can follow it like it says in 2 Nephi 32, because that is the only doctrine given, so it’s pretty dang important. </span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; min-height: 15px;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">My companions are good friends and I love them. I learn a ton from them! (not when they try to teach me though:) One of my companions’ dad died while he’s been out, I haven’t really talked to him about it, but he’s so strong and a really cool kid. </span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; min-height: 15px;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">I was talking to Thunder man again the other day. I really tried listening with the spirit and I started to realize, this guy is some sort of visionary man!! Holy crap! It was awesome! He was telling me how he was hungry, so he prayed to God to catch a big fish. When he went fishing he caught a huuuuuge fish but it had a crown on its head, which he took and held, and the crown granted him power over the sea, even to covering all the land with water, but because he wanted to restore balance he threw the crown back into the water. When I first heard this I was like what the *^%$?! But when I looked at it from a symbolic standpoint, the spirit likened it unto this cool parable. He prayed for strength from God and God gave it to him because of his faith, but once he had the strength and power he then surrendered it back to God to restore balance. He said it was a great trial for him to throw the crown back. Anyway, kinda weird but I learned something. He also told me about the second coming and the iron rod and the Godhead and how we have to choose the right and grab the iron rod or we wouldn’t see the light come out of the sky during the second coming of God. He told me the only one who could pull us out of the hole with the rope was Jesus, and the lightning that came down from the sky was God’s commandments and that’s why he grabbed on to them to choose the right!!!! Wow. I just want to hear more from this guy! Anyway, the whole time we were talking I really felt like he was my friend and that I loved him. I’m glad the spirit prompted me to talk to him so I didn’t just judge him as hopeless.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; min-height: 15px;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">This week we’ve been teaching a lot of people, but most just like to hear us talk, not pray or read or do anything! So we have to drop a lot of people and let them know we’re here to invite them to Christ through faith, and then not teach them for like a month and see if that does anything-- and it works a lot! They realize the lack of spirit and it makes them want to act and have faith for themselves. I love the people who are so ready to put the gospel to the test and find their own witness. They’re so easy to teach! We have this one guy who has read the book of Mormon one and a half times already and knows it’s true and knows the gospel is true, but he won’t come to church because of his social life in his 7th day church, but he’s a really cool guy and we are inviting him to go cave exploring with us next P-day. That’ll be fun! </span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; min-height: 15px;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">The investigators named Suzette and Hores who are married came to church last week and they had a good experience. They appreciated the classroom setting of Sunday school and actually learning doctrine, but they missed the shouts and praises of their church. I tried to explain we don’t worship God just with our lips but with our heart and that that was the environment we try to culture at church-- one where you can find God inside of you, instead of around you. </span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; min-height: 15px;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">So far I’ve met a few prophets, or so they claimed to be-- but mostly it just sounds like they had some satanic experience, even though they describe the spirit and God perfectly. I think people out here are so open to the spiritual realm, and because of that they have a lot of good experiences, but they also lack discernment to tell when they’re straight-up possessed, and think it’s God. I haven’t had to cast out any devils yet though...</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; min-height: 15px;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">The fruit here is crazy! I’ve had star fruit and jack fruit and bread fruit and cashew fruit and mango and cane and coconut and everything! Everyone makes really good juice to go with their chicken and rice (which is still the only dish I’ve been feed) except for when they feed us fish, but I’m not complaining-- it’s all so good-- they have the best chicken in the whole world here! </span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; min-height: 15px;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">We did some more service for a member, pulling dirt up two stories onto a roof to make cement for her house construction. When we leave a spiritual thought with a member, my companions always say, "Well, we’d like to leave a spiritual thought with you, Elder Johnson has prepared one for you." Even though I hadn’t prepared anything. It’s mostly just funny and I always make it work, but after like the tenth time I started doing it to them:) They didn’t think it was funny:) I’ve been soooooooooooooooo tired lately, but today I’m feeling pretty good. I always fall asleep during nightly planning. I’m sure I’ll get used to it soon. </span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; min-height: 15px;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">Anyway, I think that’s about everything. Me and my companions buy ice cream like every other day for 100$ ($1 US), it’s become a tradition. Also the other day I had a jelly, which is a coconut that’s full of water. They hack the top off right there and you drink it and give it back, then they hack it in half and you scrape the meat out and eat it and then pay them. It’s pretty cool. </span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; min-height: 15px;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; min-height: 15px;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">The computer is really bad and I can't send any photos. Sorry. </span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">Love you guys,</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(35, 35, 35); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Arial; min-height: 15px;">

Also we have like 100 gallons of water and filter water bottles so don't worry. The mosquitos are starting to stop biting too, so don't worry about that either. My diet is fine, I buy fruits and veggies from the market place for dirt cheap.(He's just responding to all my worries!) Also my bike is nicer than both my companions, I got it used from the last missionary. I kinda leave them in the dust wherever I go. I love you all so much! Thanks for being worried Mom but I'm fine, I love you. :)<br /><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

Also, a week ago I asked a less-active to be baptized!!! Hahaha, she just looked at me like, "What?" and then my companion whispers that she's a member! And so I was like, "Oh, I mean, now it's time for the baptism of fire." We all laughed and she was nice about it. :) We still get fed everyday by someone. Apparently, this is like the only area where people are so nice. The other missionaries at zone conference said they never get fed. Also, this area is the most beautiful and least violent crime-wise, so I pretty much lucked out. <br /></span><div>

<br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This is me and my companions walking on a wall between a robbed graveyard(?) and a small ocean that was in the road! It was a fun day!<br /><br />The other day I met a guy who rode a motorcycle and called himself 'Thunder man'. He told me his life story while he was smoking a joint, and it goes like this (he's like 50):<br /><br />"Two bolts of lightning came down and I grabbed them with my hands and God pulled me up to heaven on the bolts. He then showed me the creation of the world and I walked through the door of the moon and the door of the sun and saw the orbit of the universe ( I'm summarizing the story-- he was saying way more crazy stuff). He then told me that Adam and Eve were not the first people on earth, it was a man named George who was a ninja and who could control the elements and he came to earth in a meteor...<br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Anyway he was nuts, but I really loved listening to his craziness! :) I think he actually was struck by lightning. :)<br /><br />Oh one more story, we met this guy named Mr. Brown behind a bar and taught him about the origin of the Book of Mormon, but he refused to even pray to know if Christ came to the Americas. He basically worshiped the Bible and was really stuck in his ways. I really loved him though, and really just hoped he would pray about anything. Then while my companions were fighting with him it started to rain. I knew there was nothing else we could say to convince this man that he needed to pray, yet I felt like we should stay, even though my companions were basically yelling at this guy. All of a sudden, a younger man walks under our roof to stay dry and immediately picks up a Book of Mormon, and starts reading the introduction and the testimony of the witnesses. While he's doing this Mr. Brown is yelling at him, telling him we were liars and stuff, but he just kept reading and saying "It's just a testament of Jesus." Then we told him about how the book talks about how Christ came to the Americas. Mr. Brown screamed, "Lies!" but he just said, "Show me." So we turned to 3 Nephi and he started reading aloud the acount of Christ coming to the people and how they felt the prints in his hands and side and were crying. The whole time Mr. Brown kept yelling, but his eyes just kept getting brighter and brighter. When he was done he just looked at Mr. Brown and said, "This book talks about Jesus." Mr. Brown walked out-- even though it was raining (people do not like to get wet here) and the younger man told us that Mr. Brown was like his father figure, but he was so faithful that he just kept reading about Jesus. Anyway, we shared the message of the restoration and made a return appointment. I can't wait to see him next, because he knows the Spirit and is willing to pray, and the adversary using Mr. Brown just strengthened his understanding of the spirit because he was able to feel the opposition. It was awesome! I love you guys, have a great summer! <br /><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Hey Mom and family and Rachel! </span></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Wow, it is so humid here you sweat allllllll the time no matter what, and it's pretty hot too, but my companions tell me it's the cool season. Yep companions. I'm in a tripanionship, it's actually really nice to have 2 trainers. They're both really great and I like both of them and it's really fun the three of us together in a house with another companionship. So there's five in all living in our house. It's a super crappy house, not as bad as Conners, but around here it's a pretty good house. At least it keeps the rain out. We cleaned today and I swept the floor three times and got the same amount of dirt each time-- it was crazy! We don't have a dryer, we hang up our clothes to dry in our bedroom, which turns our bedroom into a huge swamp cooler with the fans running. </span></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I got a bike but Elder Humphrey's bike is broken right now so we walk everywhere, or taxi. A taxi here is basically anyone with a car:) you just pay them 100$ (US $1) flat rate to go any where on their route (usually about 2 or 3 miles long) so to go 5 miles it costs 200$ one way. The taxi drivers are crazy and everyone drives like a maniac-- it's fun. Also everyone drives on the other side of the road which is weird. Wow, it's a third world country over here for sure. The shopping side of my area is way ghetto and there are people selling stuff everywhere. Everything is pretty cheap too, they give us plenty of money for food. The houses people build out here (everyone builds their own house) are all made from cement and cinder block and that's it. They build the first floor and live in it until they get the money to finish the second and third floors, which basically just means that 90% percent of the houses out here are only half built. Oh and the roads are terrible. </span></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So thats all the temporal stuff, but the people out here are amazing!!! For the most part they're kind, warm, and friendly and want to talk. So many people want to learn the gospel. The members are super awesome and always feed us:) the food is amazing!!!! It's so good, mostly rice and chicken, but wow it's awesome!! Right now we have a few investigators. The ones that are progressing are named Suzette and Hores, they're married and have been trying to find the right church for a while, they never heard about our church but they're very open with the lessons and read the BoM every day and they're going to come to church. I can see they're starting to feel the truth of the restored gospel:) I really hope they choose to be baptized. We extended the invitation and they said they'd prepare if they kept feeling the spirit:) Our other awesome investigator is Anisha, she is really nice and smart, she has a boyfriend who she lives with and a daughter. She wants to be baptized but has to get married first, so she's working on that and hopefully we'll be able to help her from there:) </span></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">We probably walk like fifty miles a day, but it's so beautiful out here it totally makes it worth it. Trees everywhere, green everywhere, no brown just green and every other tree is a fruit tree of some kind. But the only one we have in the US is mango, all the other fruit trees are totally new to me and so far they've all been really tasty. We just ordered a crate of 200 mangos for 15$US. Also they have cook shops over here for like 350$($3.50US) you can buy a huge plate of awesome food! And they give us enough money, I could literally buy cook shop every meal and never have to cook. The bugs really aren't that bad. I use bug spray at night since that's when they seeem to get me. Oh, and get this, so my companions have never been in a Hurricane but this year they predict three!!! And one is supposed to be major! I'm so excited! Don't worry, my house is really solid and we have food and water storage. </span></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Oh my other companions name is Elder Packer and he's cool too. They've both been out almost two years one is leaving in 6 weeks the other in 12 weeks, so they'll be around just long enough to train me. The way people talk out here is really hard to understand, even when the don't speak Patois (Slang English, like Pidgin in Hawaii). I can only understand half of it, if they do speak Patois, no chance I'll get any of it yet. I don't think I'll be coming back with an accent. We have done two service projects so far. One we built a tin roof, the other we hauled about a ton of rocks onto a roof for cement to build the third story of a house. We just put them in buckets and hauled them up on the roof. </span></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>

Also eveyone calls me a China man, which I love! Little kids come up to me and say ''Ching chong ching chong"-- it's so funny. I think they can tell I'm Asian because in the humidity my hair sticks out a ton! So much for a nice hair cut:) Jerk chicken is awesome, stew chicken is awesome, curry chicken is awesome, brown sauce chicken is awesome, all the chicken is awesome!!! And they make really good pumpkin rice. We do a ton of planning, we plan our days for an hour every day after study and every week we have a super plan where we plan for three hours!! Not a fan. Oh well. I sleep super good-- my sheets (We got him bamboo sheets, because they are supposed to be cool) are also really awesome, thanks Mom. The other night the bar next door played music till 2am in the morning so loud it literally shook the house and I slept through it! They have these centipedes out here called 40 leggers, I have yet to see them but look them up they're crazy! Super poisonous and apparently it hurts super bad to get stung. </span></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Also the other day I saw a snail that was like 3 pounds! It was twice as big as my name tag! And they have these huge bannana spiders out here-- they're really cool and they get like as big as my hand! Everyone hangs out outside here. It's a totally different culture, very effective for meeting people though. There are soooooo many dogs and goats and chickens just wandering around everywhere!!!! The goats and chickens all look pretty good and normal but the dogs out here are the saddest things you've ever seen. They all look like puppies even though they're older, they just are skinny and their growth is stunted, but they're friendly for the most part. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<div dir="ltr">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I'm having an amazing time out here spiritually. God has blessed me to feel his love for everyone I've met and it's almost been more than I can handle because it's so awesome. Also, He's really helping me learn a lot, even though I'm not really sure what it is yet-- when I figure it out I'll tell you:) Love you Mom and Dad. I really miss talking to you. You guys are my best friends. Oh, just so you know, it takes a month for letters to come and leave Jamaica, so we should just email. Also packages can take 2-4 months, up to 6, so if you send a package, make sure it's ahead of time. Also, make sure it's nothing too valuable because they go through every package and take what they what they please. One missionary got an empty pack of Oreo's, because they decided to eat them. Tape pictures of Jesus on packages you send me, people over her are superstitious and apparently that works. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I think that is about everything-- is that enough Mom?;) (When we found out Rachel got four page letters from the MTC, and we only got a paragraph, I told him that I wiped his butt for 3 years and he owed me MORE! lol)</span></div>

We are happy to let you know your son, Elder Luke Nakaya Johnson, arrived safely in Kingston, Jamaica. He is in good spirits and arrived anxious to become involved in the great work being done here. When he arrived we met him at the airport and brought him to the mission home where he spent his first night. We helped him with banking and immigration matters and then provided training and orientation. </div>

He was interviewed and met his trainer, Elder Humpherys. They then went to their area where they began the work he came here to do. Your son will be serving in the Linstead Ward. As parents, we can appreciate your concern for him and his welfare and felt you would like to know he is safe and doing fine. </div>

We want to thank you for raising such a fine son and for your support for him while he is here. Your support for the next few weeks while he may experience some homesickness will be very important. The work is really beginning to blossom here in Jamaica and the people are warm and friendly. We are confident he will have a special experience. We can assure you we will do everything we can to help him grow and develop and are confident his testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ will increase. Through his mission experiences he will draw closer to our Savior. We are so grateful to have him here.</div>

<span style="background-color: #999999; color: white; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br />I'm having so many spiritual experiences. I've been completely overwhelmed. I don't think the MTC is like it used to be, all they focus on is Jesus and the spirit and it's so awesome! I haven't even heard that much lame stuff-- it's all been about sharing the love of Christ! I'm so excited to go to Jamaica and I know good things are coming for everyone who loves God! I don't know how, I can just feel it!</span><br />
<span style="background-color: #999999; color: white; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br />I'll call you at the airport. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: #999999; color: white; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br />Love you Mom and Dad.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: #999999; color: white; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /><br />*Luke did call this morning when he was on layover in Atlanta GA. He said the flight to Jamaica would only be 2 more hours. He was traveling with an Elder and a Sister, and they had permission to call people on the layover. I tried to soak it all in, knowing I won't hear his voice again until Christmas! He is super excited, the 3 of them were trying to convert their seat mates on the plane! His p-days are Monday in Jamaica, so I'll be posting his letters then. </span>Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00210229216055218902noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2430574838827710392.post-21343098751609102512015-05-14T11:18:00.000-07:002015-05-27T11:29:07.560-07:00First Letter from the MTC<span style="background-color: #666666; color: white; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Hey Mom and Dad,</span><br />
<div>
<span style="background-color: #666666; color: white; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: #666666; color: white; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I really appreciate your letters. Your ideas about truth are awesome Dad, and I think you're right about the BofM having truth (being worthy of attention) besides being 'true'. Anyway, I love you so much and I really miss our talks. God has been teaching me that if I just love and listen to an investigator without thinking of what I'm going to say, the love can spill over to them and the spirit will talk through me. I've been having a lot of really amazing stuff happen, like yesterday I helped Elder Lybird while we were role playing. He was acting as his friend in college who feels like he's not good enough to be baptized. I was playing the part of the missionary and told him that we're not going to be perfect but we are going to try and even though we might let go of Jesus' hand for a while, he still keeps it extended and we just have to take it and he will always help us up. Anyway, Elder Lybird was like, "Now I know what to tell my friend!" We were all crying and we felt Jesus' love-- it was cool!</span><br />
<div>
<span style="background-color: #666666; color: white; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I tried slack lining today with the elders in my district, but after about half an hour they made us take it down :) Oh well. I really like getting your letters Mom, that Dear John* was so funny! I read it to all my buddies and they laughed. My friends here are really cool and I'm having awesome spiritual experiences every day. I can't wait to get out there and share the love of Christ so everyone can be as happy as I am :) God has really been teaching me that all you have to do is love the investigator and the spirit just talks for you. It's really been amazing! I cry every day :) </span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: #666666; color: white; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Love you so much,</span></div>
<span style="background-color: #666666; color: white; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Luke</span><br />
<span style="background-color: #666666; color: white;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">*From Kristin: The Dear Elder website has a page of Dear John letters that peeps have submitted. So I was reading through some of them after writing to Luke and came across one that was just so funny, and was signed Rachel (Luke's girlfriends name), and so I copied it and sent it to him for a laugh. Here it is:</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br />
Dear Elder Mills,</span><br />
<span style="background-color: #666666;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">How are you doing? Are you baptizing lots? I hope the mission is going well for you. How is your health? Drinking lots of water? I was once told water cures everything ;). Well all the roomies are doing well... Madison is missing Joshua - seeing as he just left. Mike is Abby's NCMO hehe. Jessica and Dylan are enduring hay season... Vanessa is as usual - stressed with all the things she is accomplishing, oh and she has an A- in one of her classes! Jenny... well sad to say... is engaged to Brad. By the way Brad says to tell you hi! So I guess that leaves me... and well... ya, me. So Logan, I've been thinking, you are just too tall and skinny and I find it disturbing that you can wear my pants. Your hair is too short; you can't even part it. I hate Will Ferrell movies and especially The Family Guy!! The fact that you are soooo stupid that you didn't listen and get your visa in on time and now you're stuck in California complaining about it just makes me sick.</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: #666666;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So due to higher quality applicants, you're candidacy has been terminated for the position of long-term partner. I am way out of your league, aim lower next time ;)! </span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: #cccccc; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: #cccccc; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Manny Handshakes,</span><br />
<span style="background-color: #cccccc; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Sister Winterton</span><br />
<span style="background-color: #cccccc; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">(Rachel)</span></div>

He was upbeat and positive, but it sounded like he was really tired. He says his companion and district are cool. His teacher is awesome (Do they have only one?), and his Branch president is hard to listen too. lol. Not sure why, as he didn't elaborate.<br />
<br />
He asked us to invite Rachel, so she was there too. He talked to her for about 10 minutes of the 30. She felt bad taking any time away from us, but I know he really wanted to talk to her, so it was ok. We didn't have much to tell him, since it's only been four days.<br />
<br />
He said they play volleyball, and they won't let him wear his 5 fingers, so he has to wear his heavy hiking boots, since he didn't take any tennis shoes. He also said they won't allow ultimate frisbee, just regular frisbee, and that there is no time to slack line. lol. I wonder if he'll ever be able to do that? With only 4 hours on Pday, and so much to do in those 4 hours, it might never get used.<br />
<br />
He also said the food is good, and he can eat as much as he wants, so he's been over eating. I'm sure he'll get sick of it and slow down soon. Although I hear they have a whole wall of every cereal imaginable, so I'm sure that'll never get old with him!<br />
<br />
He leaves on May 19th at 7:05am. I wish we could go give him one more hug, but maybe it's for the best. It started raining after we dropped him at the MTC and it didn't stop for 3 days. It felt like heaven was crying with us!<br />
<br />
His info is on the side bar, I know he'd appreciate the mail, though I'm not sure he'll have much time to write anyone back. He's only allowed to email us, and his handwriting is really hard to decipher.<br />
Dearelder.com prints up your emails and delivers them the same day, so that's a good option while he's in the MTC.Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00210229216055218902noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2430574838827710392.post-51658127793974880442015-05-08T22:22:00.003-07:002015-05-27T08:12:00.370-07:00MTC<br />

The only thing that made it bearable was how excited Luke was to just GO ALREADY! I tried to keep my smile on till we drove away. It worked... mostly. </div>

I didn't edit it, and you have to look up the scriptures that are listed. He read them all. He quoted the poet, Lau Tzu who is the author of the Tao Te Ching, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taoism">Taoism</a> philosopher, just in case you're wondering.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;"><br /></span>
<span style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: initial;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Salvation unto the perfection of our souls.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Eternal life.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">To live in the kingdom with our father who is god.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">To see the face of christ and feel the prints of the nails in his hands.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">It is my testimony that this is what life is all about, it is the way. In this life or lives to come i know that is what we all exist to become.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">before we talk about the way let us first define the word repentance, repentance is essential to salvation but today id like us all to look at it with a different frame of mind. In the bible dictionary the greek translation denotes “a change of mind, a fresh view about god, about oneself, and about the world.”</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">I want us all to to form a new paradigm of repentance based on this definition and keep it in mind when thinking about the path to eternal life and salvation.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Helaman 8:15 --It says that as many as will look on the serpent shall live, and its true to look on the things of the world making them your focus in life will most likely bring you a prosperous and long life, but only in the worldly sense. The great poet Lau Tzu author of Tao TE Ching said “one who gives himself to his position surely lives long, but one who gives himself to Tao (God) surely lives forever.” to give yourself to life in this world will bring you possession and titles that will undoubtedly die with you. but if we look upon the son of god with faith and a contrite spirt we might “live, even unto that life which is eternal.”</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Romans 8:5-6, 13-14 --We know that to be the sons of god and have life eternal we must be spiritually minded and be led by the spirt of god. To reiterate this point let us read 2 Nephi 9:39</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">It says in D&C 49:5-- that we must receive christ to be saved. but what does it mean to receive christ?</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">ST Luke 9:24-26-- Here it shows ones own life can only be saved by losing it, i would interpret this to mean you can only save your life by giving/dedicating your life to god. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">In ST Luke 13:7-27-- Christ gives Parables to the Pharisees saying that only those that humble themselves can be exalted. he also teaches that some have been invited but have made excuses because of their possessions and vanity and so the poor and humble are brought higher than them. have we been called? and if so have we heeded the call to humble ourselves and come into the feast that christ has prepared for us?</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">ST Luke 12:41-48-- Christ gives another parable and warns that he that knows his father cometh and prepares not will be beaten with far more stripes than those who didn't know to begin with. have we not been given the Knowledge that our father cometh? i would say to you that we do, we have been given the scriptures and know of the restored gospel we know also that the spirt can teach all things, therefore we have the responsibility to prepare lest we be beaten with many stripes.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">2 Nephi 28:29-30, D&C 50:24, Moses 1:3.-- God is endless and so we must always be wary that we never put a halt to our learnings, god reminds us that he is infinite so it needs be essential that we learn line upon line precept upon precept, “and he that receiveth light and continueth in god receiveth more light and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.”</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; min-height: 14px;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">This is the Way. look upon the son of god. be spiritually minded and be led by the spirit. receive christ. give your life to god. heed the call and humble yourself in order to receive it. take responsibility in what you know and prepare for the day. learn line upon line never ceasing in growth. All of this brings eternal life and salvation for ourselves but once we our selves begin on this path there comes more responsibility with it and that is to gather everyone else to the path also.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Mosiah 2:17, D&C section 4-- this lays it out pretty simply. but in ST Luke 15:1-32 Christ teaches the same principle with three different parables, and reminds us that greater will be the joy over one lost sheep than the ninety and nine that never strayed, and shows us that we should bring in the sinner. Lau Tzu says “if a person seems wicked do not cast him away, awaken him with your words, elevate him with your deeds, requite his injury with your kindness, do not cast him away, cast away his wickedness.” In the parable of the prodigal son, the older son questions the father saying “all my years have i been righteous to thee but you never gave me the fatted calf”, the father says in reply “son thou art ever with me, and all that i have is thine.” in the parable it never says if the older brother goes and joins the celebration for the return of the prodigal son, but we should remember that if we are with the father we already have all that he has and we need no more cause for celebration, just the joy that comes with bringing others to god.</span></div>
