The Call

Luke didn't want a 'big reveal' party for opening his call. He only wanted his girlfriend and us there. It came in the mail when I was at piano lessons with the girls. Chris texted me to say they were opening it! Of course he was teasing.

On the way home from lessons, I started to panic a bit about where Luke might be sent. I wondered if his calling was truly inspired, or just where the computer assigned him based on the vetting program, which may or may not exist. I started praying, and asked the Lord if He had any hand at all in Luke's call. I immediately had an image of Luke curled up in the palm of a giant pair of overlapped hands, and I knew it was the Lord telling me that He had Luke in the His hands, and it was an inspired call. "I've got him." came into my mind. I was overcome with relief and gratitude to know that in this time of uncertainty, the Lord was still in charge and knew my heart, and Luke's.

Jamaica Kingston!

I wasn't too surprised to find, that Luke's call was perfectly suited to his personality and skill set. He wanted to serve in Africa, or someplace where poverty was an issue, so that he could serve not only by bringing people to a knowledge of their Savior, but could also serve their temporal needs. I hope he'll find ample opportunity in Jamaica, where the majority of the population lives in poverty.

The mission also covers the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, Turks and Caico's Islands and Guantanamo Bay Cuba, the Military base. From what we've been told, only the mission president goes to Guantanamo, and only sisters serve in the Cayman Islands. So It's just Jamaica, Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas.

His papers said no suit was required and that sandals were allowed, however, we later learned that he can't wear sandals. But he's still super excited that he won't have to wear a suit every day!

His mission president is Kevin Brown, a Jamaican native and former counselor in the Jamaica mission, and a CES teacher. We've heard from other missionaries that Pres. Brown is 'awesome'. He has 5 small children. He's only 36!

  1. Wow man, hats off to that President. I'm glad he's there though and is so 'awesome'. So you won't believe it, but we've got a guy in our 'partner' ward who's serving in Jamaica. Popular. I'm excited to hear about it.
